The Character - Teyla Emmagan: The team's guide to the Pegasus galaxy, the exotic and intelligent Teyla is from the planet Athos and is a leader among her people. When the team visits her world and learns that the Wraith have been oppressing the Athosians for generations, Teyla joins them on their journeys. She is a skilled fighter, and her people's exploration of the Pegasus galaxy through the Stargate makes her an invaluable asset to the Atlantis mission.

The Actor - Rachel Luttrell: Almost as exotic as Teyla herself, Rachel was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (East Africa). Her mother is Tanzanian and her father, of British descent, is from Louisiana. When Rachel was six years old, the family moved to Toronto, Canada. She comes from a family of performers and has spent the last several years in L.A. In addition to acting, Rachel is a singer and a dancer. She has appeared on such television series as ER, Touched By an Angel, Charmed and Street Legal, and has also appeared in the 2002 Gary Sinise film, "Impostor."

In Her Own Words: "My character is fantastic. I'm sure that there are going to be other things, obviously, about the character that will evolve as we continue this process. But right now she's going to be the fighter of the team, so I'm learning all kinds of wonderful new fighting moves - martial arts skills, etc. She's very physical; she can run incredibly fast. I also think that she has some psychic ability. But all of that will come into play."
